SHAREWARE GOLF HANDICAPPING
-I-
GENERAL
Providing handicaps for golfers in accordance with USGA proce-
dures has always been an odious, error prone job. Now with the
addition of slope ratings and the calculation of a Handicap
Index it is even more so. Many courses have turned to the com-
puter services being offered to relieve themselves of this time
consuming responsibility. The program GOLFHCAP makes it possible
to handle this work by the normal course administrative staff.
This program not only calculates the golfer's Handicap Index in
accordance with procedures set forth in the USGA publication
"USGA HANDICAP SYSTEM" but also will print membership lists,
mailing labels, score input forms, handicap index cards as well
as a monthly report to be posted in the clubhouse showing
scores, handicap index data, and both old and new indexes for
each golfer. The program also provides on request a printout of
all the handicapping data for any single golfer to help resolve
any problems. This form shows the last twenty scores, course
ratings and slope ratings and also flags the handicap differen-
tials which were used in calculating the players handicap index.
The program handles 12 groups of golfers with each group having
up to 500 members. If more than this is required the program can
be run in a different directory which would now allow an addi-
tional 12 groups and so on.
C & E Associates has chosen to use the Shareware concept to dis-
tribute this program. This is good for us in that it contains
many of the costs associated with a retail sales effort. It is
good for you since it allows you to make an intelligent buying
decision by trying the program to make sure it does what you
want before you spend your money. It does however bring with it
a legal and moral commitment to buy (Register) the program after
you have tried it and found it to be to your liking. The authors
of Shareware receive NO money from the distribution of their
efforts until you, the user, register it. If you believe the
effort that goes into writing a program such as this deserves
the thirty-five dollar registration fee then please register by
sending your check along with the form included at the end of
the documentation.
This evaluation copy of the GOLFHCAP program for shareware dist-
distribution has all of the features of the registered version
and includes a set of sample files so you can try the program
features without wasting time entering data. Since this is an
evaluation copy of the registed program, the number of golfers
in any group is limited to twenty-five. Registered users will
receive the latest program version and discounts on future rev-
isions or upgrades at a nominal cost. Program support will be
provided to both non-registered and registered users using Comp-
userve Mail addressed to Edward J. Panner, (72717,1612), or by
U.S.Mail addressed to me at the registration address.

This program is produced by a member of the Association of
Shareware professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the
shareware principal works for you. If you are unable to resolve
a shareware related problem with a ASP member by contacting the
member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can
help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but
does not provide technical support for members' products. Please
write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI
49442 or send a Compuserve message via Compuserve Mail to ASP
Ombudsman 70007,3536.
Additional information about the legalities of Shareware may be
found in the appendix to this documentation.
-III-
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
GOLFHCAP will run on any IBM compatible PC. While not required,
a color monitor is strongly recommended because it will reduce
errors and operator fatigue. The printer should be 132 columns
wide or be an 80 column printer with a compressed mode of 17
characters per inch. The 80 column printer running in the com-
pressed mode will of course produce copy that is a little harder
to read since a great deal of information is printed in a small
space.
The program requires only a single floppy disk but will run very
much faster when run on a system with a hard disk. If running on
a system with floppy drives only and with large golfer groups,
it may be necessary to run each group on its own floppy disk.
-IV-
INSTALLATION
In addition to the program and this documentation, the distribu-
tion diskette has a sample master course file called COURSE.MDF,
a sample player data file called SAMPLE and a sample player
sequence file called SAMPLE.SEQ. These files are included so you
will be able to try all of the features of the program without
waiting until you have provided your own data base.
You are encouraged to make a backup copy of the distribution
disk and use the copy when you run the program. If you are using
a floppy drive system, mount the copy on the drive of your
choice. All files created by and used by the program will be
written on the same diskette. If your system has a hard drive,
we suggest you create a sudirectory for the program and its
operating files. Copy all of the distribution disk files into
this subdirectory and store the distribution disk.
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 3
-V-
GETTING STARTED
At this point you are ready to try the program. Make sure you
are in the directory where the GOLFHCAP program is located. Type
GOLFHCAP and the program will be loaded. You can now try all of
the program features without any further data input. AFTER YOU
HAVE FAMILIARIZED YOURSELF WITH THE PROGRAMS OPERATION YOU
SHOULD DELETE THE FILES "COURSE.MDF", "SAMPLE" AND "SAMPLE.SEQ".
After that when the program is restarted you will be instructed
to create the course master data file as discussed in a follow-
ing section.
-VI-
RUNNING GOLFHCAP
If you are running the SAMPLE program, skip this section for now
since you already have the course data file provided. Go on to
the section VII. If you have already run the SAMPLE programs and
have deleted the sample files as discussed in the previous sec-
tion you are ready to customize the program for your golf
course. Start the program as previously discussed and the fol-
lowing message will appear:
MASTER COURSE FILE NOT FOUND- MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE
PROPER DIRECTORY. IF NOT, ENTER THE NAME OF THE
DIRECTORY YOU WANT.-( ie- C:\GOLF\PEBBLE ) BE SURE TO
INCLUDE THE ENTIRE PATH NAME!
IF ON THE OTHER HAND YOU WISH TO CREATE A NEW MASTER
COURSE FILE IN THIS SUB-DIRECTORY, INDICATE THAT CHOICE
BY TYPING <F>:-
ENTER NAME OF NEW DIRECTORY OR <F> FOR NEW
MASTER COURSE FILE IN THIS DIRECTORY-
The program and the files it creates and maintains must be in
the same directory or on the same diskette so if you are in the
proper directory and have not run the program before you will
have never created a master course file. The normal response to
the above message to press <F> to create the file. Doing that
results in series of questions asking for the name of the golf
course, street address, city and state, zip code and the name of
the golf professional. Answer each of these questions and you
will be told to press the <END> key to write the file or to use
up-arrows to edit the data you have entered.
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 4
After writing the master course file, the next screen will ask
you to select or create a golf group. Since you are just begin-
ning you will not have a golf group file yet. Press the <0> key
and you are asked for the new group name. The name is limited to
eight characters since this name becomes the file name of the
group. Names such as FLIGHT1 or JRWOMEN or MEN_TUES are
suggested. Next you are asked for the USGA Course Rating. This
will appear on the scorecard listed for the tees that this group
will play from. For example if this group plays from the white
tees, the White Tees may have a rating of 70.7. Whatever it is,
enter it at this time. Next you are asked for the slope rating.
This too appears on the score card for each of the tees. A slope
of 113 is average difficulty, higher numbers indicate a more
difficult course and vice versa. Enter the proper slope rating
for this group. Then you are asked if the data is correct. If
you type <N> the routine will restart, if <Y> the group data
file and the group sequence file are written. At this point the
program proceeds to the master menu.
-VII-
- AFTER THE MASTER COURSE FILE IS WRITTEN -
When the program is initially run it will start as above but
after the course file, and the group files have been written a
program start will lead to a presentation of the group file
listings asking you to chose a group by number. Having done that
the program will present the master menu. The master menu looks
as follows:
MENU
EDIT COURSE INFORMATION...CI
EDIT CURRENT GROUP FILE...EG
ADD NEW GOLFERS...........NG
DISPLAY/EDIT DATA.........DE
ADD SCORES................AS
CHANGE GOLFER GROUP.......CG
DELETE A GOLFER...........DG
RESTORE A GOLFER..........RG
PRINT ROUTINES............PR
RETURN TO DOS............DOS
DISK DIRECTORY...........DIR
Highest Golfer Number= 0
=*= PLEASE SELECT =*=
Each of these selections will be discussed in the order in which
they are most likely to be used. The highest golfer number lets
you know how many golfers have been entered in the golf group
you have selected.
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 5
-VIII-
ADD NEW GOLFERS
The initial menu selection is most likely to be this one.The
individual golfer's data format appears on the screen. The num-
ber of this golfer appears just below the USGA course rating.
Each new golfer gets a sequential number. the first data you
enter is the golfers name. ENTER THE LAST NAME FIRST, THEN THE
FIRST NAME. The group roster is maintained in alphabetical order
as determined by the last name and the program looks for the
last name first! The name as well as the street and city/state
are limited to 24 characters each. The program will only accept
24 characters so you do not have to count. There may be times
when you have to abbreviate the first name, etc. Enter the name,
street, city/state and zip code . An up arrow will take you back
to the previous line if you see a mistake.
After you have entered the personal data you may want to enter
the players scores. Since this will be covered in more detail
later we assume for now you want to go on so press the <END> key
to proceed. The players data file is written and the data screen
for the next player comes up. At this point pressing <END> will
take you back to the master menu.
-IX-
ADD SCORES
The next most likely choice will be Add Scores. When you enter
"AS" you will be asked to enter the desired golfer number or
character string. The golfer number is that number assigned when
the golfer's data is first entered into the group data. If you
happen to know it you may enter it at this time. More likely you
will know the golfer's last name in which case it will be easier
for you to enter a few characters of the name and the program
will search for his file.(ie For KELLY you might enter
KEL--WARNING-THE STRING SEARCH IS CASE SENSITIVE SO IN THIS CASE
IT WOULD NOT FIND Kel!!)
When the golfer's data screen appears enter his "ADJUSTED GROSS
SCORE". Please refer to the USGA HANDICAP SYSTEM manual and make
sure each golfer understands how his gross score must be
adjusted before he enters it on the club's score sheet. It is
important that this and the other information given in this
manual is understood by all concerned!
You are now asked for the course rating or <ENTER> for default.
When a golfer plays on his home course it should be customary
that he not enter the course and slope rating on the clubs score
sheet. When the scores are entered simply press <ENTER> each
time and the default course and slope rating will be entered
automatically. These appear at the top right corner of the
screen.
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 6
After entering a set of scores you may notice an error in the
entry. A <CTRL+BACK-ARROW> at this time will erase the last
score, course and slope entries and back up all scores by one
position. When each score is entered the number of scores
entered in this period is incremented by one. This new score
count is maintained until you print the monthly report and
handicap index cards at which time you will be asked to clear
them. This clearing is not done automatically since you may want
to print an interim report without clearing the new score count.
If, BEFORE YOU HAVE ENTERED ANY SCORES you wish to proceed to
the next or previous golfer in alphabetical order you may press
an <UP-ARROW> or a <DOWN-ARROW>. After you have entered a score,
you must exit this golfers data sheet in the normal way.
When you have entered the last score, press <END>. The data will
be processed; If there are enough entries, the handicap index
will be calculated and displayed and then the data will be writ-
ten to disk. The bottom line on the screen now offers a number
of options:
<UP-ARROW> Will display previous golfer in alphabetical order
<DOWN-ARROW> Displays next golfer in alphabetical order.
<N> Displays "Select Golfer or String" message
<E> Edit-This option will be discussed below
<H> Prints a copy of the screen on the printer
<END> Return to master menu.
The USGA manual discusses the algorithms used for calculating
the handicap index and how it is used to get a course handicap.
When a handicap index has been calculated, the handicap differ-
entials used are indicated with a "<" if they are "Home Course"
scores or with a "*" If they are scores from another course.
-X-
DISPLAY/EDIT DATA
Any or all of the data in a golfer's file may be edited. Choose
the DE option from the master menu. The golfer selection message
will appear. Select a golfer and when the data screen is
displayed, the bottom line will be the same one we have just
discussed in the second last paragraph of the Add Score section
above.
When you select <E> for Edit the cursor will move to the
golfer's name. If it is correct, simply press <ENTER> and the
cursor will move to the "Street" line. Correct any of these
lines or simply press <ENTER> to accept them as they are. After
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 7
you pass the "Zip Code" line you will be asked to enter the
"Number" of the score you wish to edit. This "Number" refers to
the numbers in the lines marked "#" on the screen. You may cor-
rect any of these scores just as you did when they were entered
originally. When finished, press <END> and the handicap index
will be recalculated and the corrected data will be written to
disk. At this point the bottom line will again reflect the
options you have as discussed above.
-XI-
DELETE/RESTORE A GOLFER
For one reason or another you may want to delete a golfer from
the output routines. Because of the amount of data stored in
each golfer's data block and since you may want to reinstate him
at a later time, his data block is simply flagged rather than
eliminated and will not be printed in the output routines. It
may however be examined, edited just as any other data block.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GOLFER'S NAME HAS BEEN PRECEDED WITH THE
"$" CHARACTER. DO NOT EDIT THIS OUT!
When you select a golfer to be deleted you will be asked type a
"V" to verify the deletion. Restoring a golfer is done in
exactly the same way.
-XII-
EDIT COURSE INFORMATION
From time to time it may be necessary to edit the golf course
info as a result of change of address or hiring a new golf
professional, etc. Entering CI will present the current data on
a line by line basis. If the data on that line is correct, sim-
ply press <ENTER> or make the necessary corrections using the
customary editing keys of backspace, back arrow, right arrow,
insert and delete. When finished, <END> will write the corrected
file or <UP_ARROW> will let you go back to make additional
corrections.
-XIII-
EDIT CURRENT GROUP FILE
If you would like to change the information for the current
group or delete it entirely you may do so with this command.
When you enter "EG" the screen will display:
EDITING CURRENT GROUP- groupname
TO DELETE THIS ENTIRE GROUP PRESS [<CONTROL><END>] AT THIS TIME
:*:*:* WARNING--ALL DATA WILL BE LOST!!! *:*:*:
PRESS ANY OTHER KEY TO PROCEED WITH EDIT
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 8
If you press the <CTRL> key and the <END> key at the same time,
all data files pertaining to this group will be deleted and the
group will be eliminated from the group list!!! More than likely
you simply want to change group name or course rating or slope
so press any key to proceed. Again you can now correct any of
the group items. When you indicate correct data, the file will
be written and you are returned to the group select screen.
-XIV-
DOS & DIR
Before going on to the print commands, a brief mention of DOS
and DIR is in order. Typing DIR (For Directory listing) results
in the message:
ENTER DRIVE AND PATH-
If you simply press
<ENTER> the current directory files will be displayed. You may
examine any other directory on the system by simply typing drive
and path of the directory you wish to examine.
GOLFHCAP DOCUMENTATION PAGE 8
The DOS command is simply the program exit command and may be
issued at any time from the master menu. When you type DOS you
will be asked to verify your return to DOS by typing a "V".
-XV-
THE PR COMMAND AND PRINTER OUTPUT ROUTINES
To display the printer output menu, type PR. the menu displayed
looks as follows:
REPORT MENU
MONTHLY REPORT........=> MR
SCORE INPUT FORM......=> SF
HANDICAP CARDS........=> HC
MAILING LABELS........=> ML
GROUP MEMBER LIST.....=> GM
MASTER MENU...........=> MM
PLEASE SELECT -
The SAMPLE data supplied contains data for 20 golfers. This will
let you run each of this options so you may examine them. The
monthly report is generally printed once per month as the name
indicates and is then posted on the bulletin board.
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page- 9
The HANDICAP INDEX CARDS are intended to be given each member
but many clubs prefer to have small cards printed and the play-
ers Handicap Index is simply filled in. After the Monthly Report
or Handicap Index Cards you will be asked to "Zero" the Newscore
count. Do this after both of these options have been run since
the "Newscores in This Period" data will be set to zero for the
next period.
The mailing labels are printed in three across format. if you
prefer some other format, get in touch with us and it can be
arranged.
The group membership list is often useful and it may be that
other applications may be implemented using the data base that
is available. Let us know!

Shareware
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. The author specifically grants the
right to copy and distribute the software, either to all or to a
specific group.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's Commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it. Shareware distribution gives
users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a
Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register.
GOLFHCAP is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but do not give it away altered or as part of another
program. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide
personal computer users with quality software without high
prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue
to develop new products. If you find this program useful and
continue to use it after a reasonable trial period, you must
make a registration payment of $35.00 to C & E Associates
The registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
a book. An example is that this software may be used by any num-
ber of people and may be freely moved from one computer location
to another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used
at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.
Anyone distributing GOLFHCAP for any kind of remuneration must
first contact C & E Associates at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted
to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its
guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
begin offering GOLFHCAP immediately (However C & E Associates
must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
up-to-date with the latest version.)
GOLFHCAP Documentation Page-11
You are encouraged to pass a copy of GOLFHCAP along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users
will receive a copy of the latest version of the program.
The distribution of GOLFHCAP by shareware vendors and other
distributors of user supported software is hereby authorized.
GOLFHCAP is copyrighted software and is not placed in the
public domain but rather is entered in the Shareware market so
that potential users may insure that it meets their needs.
The registration fee for the program is a only $35.00. Reg-
istered users will automatically receive software support and
notice of any program enhancements. Any future new versions will
be made available to registered users for a nominal fee.
